I know some parents are really nervous about having their college student have their own credit card. I don't blame them. It is really easy for anyone to get into credit card debt.

Both of my kids got their own cards when they started college. They were a distance from home and we felt they needed a card for emergencies. We talked to them before hand and my wife and I were allowed to help monitor their cards. Of course they used them for other things.

The convenience of using a credit card does come in handy. Both of kids built up a balance that they had to pay back. I believe they learned some good lessons.

They now are about to getting out of college and they have a really good credit score. They use their cards a lot but they have learned to pay the balances off each month.
